Bristol strike vote delayed to make way for more talks

A vote on strike action by journalists at the Bristol Evening Post and Western Daily Press looks unlikely to take place before the end of the month.

National Union of Journalists members at the two Northcliffe-owned newspapers had earlier voted to delay a ballot to allow more time for negotiations.

The company announced 36 proposed redundancies and no date has yet been set by the NUJ for the ballot to take place.

Members had previously voted in favour of a ballot on strike action.

Union representatives are due to meet with the company again tomorrow to discuss changes put forward under the group-wide Aim Higher programme, and the union is expecting the company to announce the exact number of job cuts on January 23.

A day of action is scheduled for the following day, January 24, with journalists from both titles demonstrating peacefully outside the Temple Way building.
