Borrell set for Birmingham

It was in this role that he made his biggest impact: “I launched the paper in the tabloid format, just as I have done here at the Lancashire Evening Post. It was a big job, but it worked out well,” he said

The experience gained there benefited him greatly when he joined the Lancashire Evening Post.

Roger took over in 1999 and immediately set to work in turning the newspaper from the old-fashioned broadsheet format. In September 2000, the paper was re-launched, and is now reaping the benefits.

Roger said: “We have the best sales figures in the group, it was extremely hard work, but it is the achievement I am most proud of in my career.

“Being my first editor role, I will always have strong affections for this paper and the team, but I am looking forward to the challenge ahead.”

He leaves the paper in a very healthy state, after being nominated for five out six categories in the BNFL North West Newspaper Awards.

He said: “It’s just reward for the tremendous hard work the team has put in since we re-launched, it also puts the man taking over from me in a nice position.”

Roger will be succeeded by Simon Reynolds, who is currently deputy editor at the Edinburgh Evening News.

Roger will be hoping the newspaper will have a host of trophies to accompany its new editor, when the winners are announced in July.
