Blairs in the tourist trap

The Evening Press pounced when Tony Blair visited York to shout the message that Britain was open for business.

The PM, accompanied by his wife Cherie, underlined the message by visiting Jorvik, the world-famous Viking Centre which has just undergone a £5m revamp.

He used the visit to stress to the world that Britain’s tourist attractions are open and the country was safe for tourists.

And as he paused for pictures at the doors of the new-look Jorvik, that day’s Evening Press – covering his visit – was handed to him as a photo prop.

The paper contained an Easter supplement showing all the attractions around York and North Yorkshire which were open and not restricted by foot and mouth disease.

Mr Blair duly posed with the supplement for newspaper and TV cameras from all over the world.
