Birthday special for Citizen's 125th

Readers of the Gloucester Citizen are being treated to a special supplement in celebration of the paper’s 125th birthday.

The special pull-out guides readers through the history of the newspaper, showing the front page of its first edition, and includes pictures of how Gloucester has changed over the years.

The supplement also takes a look at the different editors over the years, who include Colin Walker, Mike Lowe and Spencer Feeney.

There are also features on the technology used by the paper and the many campaigns that have featured on its pages.

Well-known local personalities pay tribute to the Citizen on its pages.

Novelist Jilly Cooper said: “Since living in Bisley, The Citizen has given me constant excitement, information and pleasure. It is a terrific newspaper.

“You work really hard and are often first with a story that is picked up by the nationals. The reporters are courteous and charming when they telephone.”

Gloucester Mayor Terry Haines said: “I personally hold the Citizen in high esteem. I consider it a virtual responsibility for any Gloucesterian who wishes to keep informed of city life to read it.”

And the Bishop of Gloucester Rt Rev David Bentley said: “I am pleased that the Citizen regularly reflects the fact that the church is more than buildings by including news of the people of God at work in Gloucester today.”
