Big-hearted readers stump up the cash in Cumbria

A charity fund has received a huge boost thanks to a successful fun day organised by the North West Evening Mail.

Mail readers have already helped raise more than £30,000 for the paper’s Heartsaver Appeal during the last few months.

And the Mail’s own day of summer fun has brought in another £3,000, this time for Barrow’s NSPCC centre.

The cash was raised as big-hearted readers braved July wind and rain.

Evening Mail sales and marketing director Lyndsay Aspin said: “The £3,000 will go to pay for therapy for neglected and abused children.

“We actually raised £209,000 to build the centre in the first place and each year we have a fun day to support it, and so far have handed over a total of around £230,000.

“We launched the Heartsaver Appeal in November to raise £20,000 for four defibrillators for Furness General Hospital but we raised that total and has enough for two more.

“That appeal was started when we read about nurses breaking into their training fund to buy equipment, so we raised an extra £2,000 to top that up too!

“The people of South Cumbria are generous and warm-hearted. Even in these times of recession and redundancy they still put their hands in their pockets.”

She added the £3,000 from the Fun Day was down on the previous year but was a terrific result considering the poor weather. Dozens of local firms and organisations got together with the Mail to back the big day.
