Awards salute cream of the weeklies

The Bucks Herald has been named Weekly Paid-for Newspaper of the Year by the Newspaper Society.

The Milton Keynes Citizen won the Free Newspaper of the Year title in the society’s Weekly Newspaper Awards 2000.

Both papers were praised for their vibrant news and features, community focus, excellent leisure sections, imaginative approach and quality of production.

The awards were announced at a gala dinner in Newcastle following the society’s Weekly Newspaper Conference.

They were presented by David Kerr, chairman of sponsor Clacksons, and the society’s president, James Evans.

Best News Journalists were Bryan Carter, of the Lancaster Guardian, (paid-for newspapers) and Guy Anderson, of the Skelmersdale Champion (frees).

Kellie Redmond, of the South London Press, was named Best Feature Journalist (paid-for weeklies).

The Best Photographer awards went to Ian Mutch, of the Glasgow South and Eastwood Extra, (frees) and Vicky Alhadeff, of the Enfield Gazette (paid-fors).

Awards for the most unusual or successful revenue-generating idea went to the Southport Visiter, for its Motor Search Directory, and to the Milton Keynes Citizen for Chill Out.
