Awards for endeavour from the Newspaper Society

The Newspaper Society is joining forces with the Nationwide Building Society and the National Council for Voluntary Organisations to launch the 2001 Nationwide Awards for Voluntary Endeavour.

They are looking for local heroes making outstanding contributions to their communities.

The scheme is now in its fourth year and covers all of the UK, last year attracting almost 1,500 entries.

Newspaper Society director David Newell said: “Local communities are at the centre of Britain’s heritage and culture.

“Regional and local newspapers reflect each community’s heart and the key contribution volunteers make in keeping communities alive.

“This awards scheme recognises the value of these contributions and the Newspaper Society is pleased once again to be involved.”

Anybody who wants to nominate someone they believe deserves an award can pick up a leaflet containing a nomination form from their local Nationwide Building Society, their local public library or check their local paper for an application form.

There are four award categories: Young people under 18 as individuals, Young people under 18 in groups, Adults as individuals, and Adults in groups.

Eighty regional winners will each receive a plaque, along with £50 of dining vouchers for individuals or £100 for groups.

Four finalists from each region will win gifts to the value of £250 and a trophy, plus a £500 donation to the charity or cause of their choice.

Four national winners – one in each category – will each receive gifts to the value of £500, and a £2,500 donation to the charity or cause of their choice.
