Argus turns its patch plastic in bid to make nights out safer

The South Wales Argus is turning its patch plastic after calling on local pubs and clubs to do more to combat instances of ‘glassing’.

The Newsquest evening title is driving a campaign, supported by Gwent Police, to persuade all the bars in its area to switch from glasses to plastic beakers in the evenings.

Many licensed premises in Newport city centre have now converted to polycarbon beakers.

They cost 10p more than glasses but last four times longer, and Gwent Police have applied for a £10,000 grant to help other pubs and clubs with the costs of switching over.

Argus editor Gerry Keighley said: “Last year there were 57 glassings in the county.

“That means horrific injuries, blindings and lifetime scarring for the victims, as well as huge bills for the NHS.
