Argus steps up hunt for mum

The hunt for the mother of a baby abandoned outside a couple’s front door has been boosted by the South Wales Argus.

A series of police appeals for his mother to come forward has met with no response.

Now the Argus has produced a poster featuring a photograph, the words ‘Do you know this baby?’ and contact details for the police team leading the hunt.

The baby – named Oliver by police – was found by a couple outside their home in Newport on January 20.

Oliver is aged between 18 and 21 weeks and is believed to be the oldest baby abandoned in Britain.

He was found in his pushchair with a supply of bottles and nappies.

Copies of the poster were distributed throughout Gwent by the Argus and the police.

Editor Gerry Keighley said: “This is a unique case of baby abandonment, given the age of the baby, and police are desperate to discover who Oliver really is and where his mother is.

“Our deputy news editor Maria Williams came up with the idea of the poster. It was designed by deputy editor Kevin Ward and distributed by our newspaper sales team.

“The police are grateful for our help and I hope it produces the right result.”
