The start of February brought the South Wales Argus its highest selling week for seven years.
Base sale for Monday-Saturday topped 31,800 for the first time since 1997, a rise of nearly two per cent on the same week in 2003.
The Newport-based Newsquest evening title raised its price by 3p to 35p in October.
Editor Gerry Keighley said the sale was increased on the Monday by a drowning tragedy, but apart from that it was a fairly average news week.
