Animal Magic in Southampton

A south coast zoo has been handed more than £8,000 in only five days since the Southern Daily Echo launched its Animal Magic appeal.

The fund was launched to help the zoo survive during its closure to stem the spread of foot and mouth disease.

Staff there have been working without heating and lights to save money and stave off a financial crisis.

Marwell Zoo costs £7,500 a day to run and readers are being urged to send £5 to help with the animals’ upkeep. Fund raising events are also being held to increase the donations.

Since the campaign was launched, 400 people have made contributions of between £10 and £20 and there have been some larger gifts of £200 and £500.Marwell Preservation Trust administrator Lynne Stafford said: “The support from the public has been tremendous.

“We have got another day’s grace with this money.”
