Advertiser's photo helps investigation

A photo that was e-mailed from the offices of the Newark Advertiser has led to the questioning of a suspect by Interpol in France.

Detectives are now talking to Mick Collinson, the former manager of Newark’s Famous Old Post Office pub, about the alleged discovery of 1½ tonnes of cannabis.

He was stopped by customs on the France/Spain border and the Advertiser e-mailed his picture to Interpol to help with identification after a request from police in Newark, Notts.

The picture was one taken by the Advertiser of Mr Collinson dressed in Post Office gear for a promotional event at the business.

Sergeant Paul Williams, of Newark CID, said: “We await the outcome of the investigation with interest and have co-operated with the French authorities to confirm identification.

“We would like to thank the Newark Advertiser for their assistance in this matter.”

French detectives now have up to five days from the time of arrest to question Collinson before placing him before an examining magistrate. The magistrate can accept a plea or remand the suspect to prison while an investigation is carried out.

If he is returned to Britain, Newark detectives will want to question him about the circumstances of his disappearance from Britain at Easter.
