Action girl Carrie tests out adventure sports

Action girl Carrie Rolls has an unusual portfolio at Mid Somerset Newspapers – she’s been asked to seek out adventure sports and write about her experiences.

Among the daredevil antics she’s found herself involved with so far are kite buggying and hot air ballooning.

Carrie described the ballooning as “sailing in the sky” and says the sport has really taken off.

After finding a local firm to clock up some air miles experience, she described her first flight of fancy above the Somerset hills.

“The ground simply fell away,” she said.

“We floated low over housing estates, whose inhabitants instinctively waved to us from kitchen windows.

“Wells Cathedral shimmered in the hazy morning light. Glastonbury Tor and nearby hummocks rose like islands through swirling mist.”

After bending the knees for a textbook landing, the party rushed off to present the farmer of the field they landed in with the traditional bottle of wine.

As for kite buggying – similar to land yachting but with a kite instead of a sail – the winds at Weston-super-Mare proved an ideal launch-pad for Carrie’s first attempt at the sport.

She said: “Experts can reach up to 70mph but amateurs can easily reach up to 30mph.

“Imagine skimming along at that speed suspended just 10cm above the ground.”
