60 years of wedded bliss for former editor

Former Bristol Observer Series editor Norman Walters and his wife Janet are celebrating 60 years of marriage.

To mark the occasion the couple enjoyed a special lunch at Gloucestershire County Cricket Club’s president suite with family and friends.

The couple met in 1940 while Norman was working at the Weston Mercury.

He had gone to review a concert where he saw Janet playing the piano. They married in 1943.

Norman, who retired in 1982, spent almost 50 years in local newspapers, joining the Bristol Evening Post in 1943 from the Weston Mercury.

He became news editor in 1948 and after 10 years became the country editor, responsible for all news coverage beyond the Bristol area for both the Evening Post and Western Daily Press.

Norman later went on to become editor of the Observer series.

He said: “Journalism was hectic but I also had a fascinating time.”
