Readers of the South Wales Evening Post and Port Talbot Courier have helped raise £20,000 for the papers Steel Blast Appeal in just two weeks.
The appeal was launched following an explosion at Port Talbot’s steel plant, which left three men dead, and others injured.
The total so far includes a £10,000 pledge from steelworkers union ISTC, as well as donations from steelworkers from all over the UK, and South Wales residents.
Seventy per cent of the money raised will go to the families of the victims, and the rest will be donated to Morriston Hospital’s burns unit, where five of the most badly injured steel workers are still being treated.
Evening Post editor George Edwards said: “This is an extremely encouraging start because we know that many people are arranging fundraising events in the run up to Christmas and New Year.”
