125 years of The News

The News, Portsmouth, will celebrate its 125th birthday on Saturday.

To mark the occasion it has produced a
32-page supplement looking back on the paper’s history so far, and the history of the communities it serves.

Editor Mike Gilson said: “The story of this area over the past 125 years is an exciting and inspiring one. We’re proud to have been a part of that story.”

The paper is also celebrating the completion of a new building at its News Centre head office, housing the latest printing technology and presses.

The new £11m facility began operation on April 8, and now prints Johnston titles stretching from Fareham in the west to the Kent border in the east, and up to Banbury.

With six new Goss Universal 70 printing towers, the company can now print 96-page tabloids with colour on every page at 70,000 copies an hour.

There are also plans for additional investment in the presses to produce newspapers of up to 160 pages.
