The Midweek Herald has celebrated publishing its 1,000th edition.
The east Devon free sheet was set up in 1982 and was the Sidmouth area’s first free newspaper.
It is well-known for its campaigning editorial, recently highlighted by coverage of plans for a ‘new town’ of 2,900 homes which promoted 21,500 residents to register their opinions to the local council.
Readers were also recently touched by the plight of a sick dog that needed a hip replacement – and sent in £1,000 on the same day the paper was published.
Lighter stories over the years include the tale of a Colyford woman who scooped £330,000 on the National lottery after coming up with the numbers in a dream, and the Seaton woman who the a lavish party – complete with strippers – to celebrate her divorce.
