When the keeper puts in some fanatics saves – the joy of submitted copy!

Supplied copy – don’t you just love it?

It can be the lifeblood of a local newspaper, bringing sports reports and parish meeting news from stringers in far-flung corners of the patch.

But it can also be a minefield for the editorial staff who have to check those speelings…

Chichester Observer sports editor Ben Steppel and his colleague Nick Collins noticed a few odd spellings or grammatical mistakes in submitted copy.

He said: “After the first half dozen or so we thought it would be a great idea to start a ‘hall of fame’, and publish it at the end of the year.

“So we did. Some are obviously funnier than others, and some require a little thought, but a number have me sniggering months after I first saw them.”

And here they are, all from the Chichester Observer series and the Petersfield Post:

“Liss won the toss and elected to bath first.”

“Within six minutes of the restart Dynamo caught Petersfield knapping.”

“In atrocious conditions Felpham struggled to beak down a dogged Worthing side.”

“The second half was never going to be a spectacle of rugby with the rain pouring down, but it was a game of nutrition as the forwards battled it out.”

“Chichester were rewarded when from a lineout, a ruck formed from the base of which Chichester’s scrum-half Legge, with a darting run, picked up and went blind.”

“However, Dan Williams destroyed the Eastergate tail leaving a poultry final score of 137 all out.”

“In the final field event Neil Simpson was less than a metre behind the Police B string in the discuss.”

“Field attacked again with exactly the same outcome but Luke Prowse putting the ball through the keeper’s legs from a very tight ankle.”

“Selsey came away with a pint on Saturday.”

“Headley manager Wayne Grover made three quick substations to try to turn the game around.”

“With Daisy Strange pushing forward, Chichester had the extra man.”

“Pirates were hanging on by a knife-edge.”

“First female runner was Christine Thomas from Poole in 31-13, nearly two and a half minuets clear of second female Kim Nelson.”

“Ellingham rallied and replied with a fine attack and attempted to putt their scrum half in at the corner.”

“Kieron Gilbert Whyke’s goal keeper put in some fanatics saves to prevent Chi from scoring.”

“This season is all about staying in there and we’re more than capable of doing that as long as we don’t get injuries in vital places.”

More tomorrow.
