Something s-pecial for the ladies…

This tale of woe for advertising staff comes from Nic Outterside, of the Aberdeen Press and Journal:

“Former colleagues at the North Wales Weekly News may remember a cracking advertisement howler from 1990.

A regular advertiser – a hairdresser from Bangor – was offering a special offer on spiral perms.

In the week in question he took out a complete half page, spot colour ad in our newspaper. The advert proclaimed in a 60pt rainbow strap that our advertiser was a: “Spiral Perm Specialist”.

Unfortunately, a tired or waggish sub inserted an extra S into the strap. Only after all 24,000 copies of our paper had hit the streets was the error noticed – by everybody!

Allegedly, the queues at our hairdresser’s salon stretched down the street, round the square and down to the harbour as ladies in their hundreds foresook their blue rinses for something much more interesting.”
