Weekly newspapers line up for annual industry awards

Journalists from weekly newspapers around the country are to gather in Warwickshire for the Weekly Newspaper Awards.

The Forest of Arden Marriott hotel will host the Newspaper Society event on Thursday.

The judges will reward both advertising and editorial successes of the past year.

The editorial awards recognise the vital role journalists play in weekly newspaper publishing.

The Newspaper Society says the event will focus on the service that local weekly newspapers give to the community and the all-round look, feel, empathy and relevance of the title.

Categories up for grabs include:

  • Newspaper community award, for campaigns championed by the newspaper working together with other companies or bodies in support of community issues;
  • Newspaper campaigning award, recognising campaigns championed by the newspaper working either independently or together with other agencies or bodies in support of a local or national issue;
  • Best news journalist;
  • Best feature journalist;
  • Best photographer;
  • 12 awards for the best free and paid-for newspapers on a regional basis;
  • Paid-for Weekly Newspaper of the Year;
  • Free Weekly Newspaper of the Year;
  • Innovative Person of the Year.
