Weekly newspaper staff set to do battle

The contenders for the Newspaper Society Weekly Newspaper Awards have been revealed, with the release of the shortlist ahead of next month’s competition.

The great and the good of the weekly newspaper industry will battle it out for 34 prizes rewarding the best in advertising and editorial from paid-for and free newspapers in the past year.

Among the titles to have caught the judge’s eye this year is the Aberdeen Independent, which was last year crowned the best free weekly newspaper in Scotland, and The Southern Reporter which was named the best paid-for weekly newspaper in Scotland.

Other previous winners who have made the shortlist once again this year include the Essex Chronicle, Taunton Times, Westmorland Gazette and Wiltshire Times.

As well as offering newspapers the chance to compete with other titles in their region, several individual awards will also be handed out, including best news journalist, best feature journalist and best photographer.

Winners will be announced during a ceremony at the Marriott Forest of Arden Hotel, near Coventry, on November 17.
