Weekly Newspaper Awards launched

The 2001 Weekly Newspaper Awards have been launched by the Newspaper Society.

The competition is open to all paid-for and free weekly newspapers in the UK, in current membership of Newspaper Society marketing.

The awards are split into 29 categories, which are designed to recognise outstanding journalism, photography, advertising and innovation.

The event is once again being sponsored Clacksons.

Chairman David Kerr said: “This is the fifth year we have sponsored these awards and I firmly believe that they are of immense significance to the industry.

“The pride and delight of the winners is apparent when they come to the stage to collect their trophy at the awards presentation each year.”

The winners of this year’s awards will be announced at the Weekly Newspaper Awards dinner at the Royal York Hotel in York on Wednesday, 17 October.

  • Last year’s winners were the Bucks Herald, which took the title of Weekly paid-for Newspaper of the Year and the Milton Keynes Citizen, which won the Weekly Free Newspaper of the Year award.

    Both newspapers were praised for their vibrant news and features, community focus, excellent leisure sections and quality of production.
