Among the winners was Holdthefrontpage’s sister website adoption-net.co.uk, which scooped the award for best online community service.

Other winners included expressandstar.com, which was awarded the prize for best web design and manchesteronline.co.uk which scooped best promotion of an online service.

In the best niche internet site category countrysmallholding.com beat entries from the pinkun.com and Holdthefrontpage, while Scotsman.com won the best daily newspaper internet site title and bucksfreepress.co.uk took the award for best weekly newspaper internet site.

The awards, sponsored by Sun Microsystems & Productivity Computer Solutions, aim to recognise the contribution that digital publishing is now making to the regional press in the UK.

The winners were announced at a gala dinner at the Hilton Birmingham Metropole by John Simcox, internet marketing manager of pcsdotNet and were presented by Phil Cook, media partner manager of Sun Microsystems and Tim Bowdler, chief executive of Johnston Press and president of the Newspaper Society.
