Highlighting unfairness and seeking to remedy inequality could be said to be two of the most important tasks of any journalist. This was a winning combination in more ways than one, which took the death of a colleague as the inspiration to speak out against the scandalous system of medical care which allows patients to die for want of routine surgery.

Natural emotion of senior editorial staff was not allowed to undermine a brilliant, well-organised campaign.

The Chance to Live campaign not only showed the chronic failings of the NHS in dealing with heart disease, but helped to shame the Government into a change of policy.

Being sent to Kosovo as a young reporter is one of the more daunting tasks to be faced with notebook, pen and roadmap. Quite apart from the logistical difficulties of reporting from one of the most dangerous troublespots of last year, there was also a small matter of being up against vastly more experienced and seasoned opposition.

But this young reporter was not daunted. He filed a series of features from the war-torn Kosovar towns and countryside, showed the dignity of those in the refugee camps, highlighted the plight of the displaced gypsies; and, of course, showed the destination of all the donations raised by his paper’s Kosovo Appeal.
