Transco Tom Cordner North East Press Awards

Myson Prize for North East Women’s Writer of the Year
Noreen Coltman, Evening Chronicle, Newcastle

CITATION
Strong writing focused on people with fascinating stories to tell won this award. Secret weddings, whirlwind romances, living with the constant threat of sudden death, coping with the aftermath of it – these were all issues this writer explored with compassion and genuine interest.

The reader is educated by this writer’s work, totally engaged, and arriving at the end of the story before knowing it. Together with a strong, practical feature on possibilities of child monitoring using CCTV and even the Internet, these are the features which win the Myson Prize.

Highly Commended
Linda Colling, Sunderland Echo

CITATION
This portfolio tackles important issues, ranging from children coping with the death of a parent to the problems of raising troublesome boys. It also contains a moving account of one woman’s 25-year fight to overcome devastating burns she received as a baby.

Persuading members of Dalton-le-Dale WI to shed a few inhibitions and items of clothing in the style of the now infamous Yorkshire WI nude calendar for charity was inspired.

For her deft touch and engaging writing style, the judges highly commended Linda Colling.
