He writes about sport away from the big-time headlines, with finely-honed observations on participants and characters of matches and contests – nowhere better illustrated than in a hugely entertaining and insightful interview with George Reynolds, chairman of Darlington Football Club.

Many attempted this one during 1999 (George’s safe-cracking past providing more colour than usual for a football chairman), but none carried it off better or gave the reader a deeper insight into the man.
