Student media shortlist is revealed

Judges of the National Student Media Awards have revealed which entries caught their eye, with the announcement of this year’s shortlist.

Organisers said the competition, run by the National Union of Students in association with the Daily Mirror, attracted a “phenomenal” number of entries, giving the judges a hard task.

Among the nominees are Cardiff University, Leeds University and Leeds Metropolitan University, Cambridge University and the University of York, which will compete for the best student newspaper prize, and City University, Bournemouth University, Portsmouth University and the University of West of England, which are all shortlisted for the best student magazine category.

Winners of this year’s competition will be announced on November 22, during a ceremony at the International Hotel in Canary Wharf.

The ceremony forms part of the union’s annual student media conference, which includes workshops on various aspects of journalism, including editing, design, freelancing, interviewing and writing.

There will also be a panel debate about the role the media plays in influencing people, which will include former Matlock Mercury editor Don Hale.
