Sentinel Sunday scoops Euro win

The Sentinel Sunday team has been crowned the best in Europe for its design work on the weekly broadsheet.

The paper was voted Best Designed Newspaper (Weekly) in the European Newspaper Awards.

The contest attracted more than 334 titles in all, from 26 countries, and included competition from the Daily Telegraph, Guardian, Observer, Independent and Sunday Herald.

The prize rewarded the Sentinel’s design and concept after judging by a cross-industry panel drawn from seven countries.

It tops off a great year for the Sentinel titles, which saw them lift the West Midlands Newspaper of the Year award and the Sunday/Daily Newspaper of the Year award at the Press Gazette awards.

The two newspapers are produced by the same team, with a couple of staff members working solely for the Sunday title.

Editor Sean Dooley said: “The Sentinel Sunday is such a different title from the daily and all our journalists love working on it.

“They are not restricted to 250 words or so, and the fact that it is a broadsheet is incredibly helpful in using pictures to their best advantage.

“There’s a different kind of feel and tone to the Sunday newspaper and the readers like it. Sales have gone from nothing to 14,500 and are growing every year.”

The presentation of the awards will take place in Vienna in April.
