Search for student talent offers foot in the industry door

The Herald in Glasgow is offering one lucky journalism hopeful a four-week paid placement in its newsroom, as part of the prize in its Scottish Student Press Awards.

The paper is looking for talented writers currently studying in Scotland, and will hand out a host of awards later in the year.

These will include Student Journalist of the Year, which carries a £500 prize and a trophy as well as the four-week placement.

Winners will also be chosen in the categories of Best News Writer, Best Features Writer, Best Sports Writer, Best Photographer and Best Production, all of which carry a £250 prize.

The winners of Best College Publication, Best Magazine and Best Newspaper will receive £500.

Judges will be looking for entrants to demonstrate original ideas and journalistic flair with a particular emphasis on exclusives.

Now in their 11th year, the awards aim to showcase, reward and develop the best student writing and publishing in Scotland.

The competition is sponsored by the Scottish Qualifications Authority and supported by The Mitchell Library.

For an entry form go to www.theherald.co.uk/sspa2007. The closing date is Friday, April 20.
