Riot coverage scoops national award

The Yorkshire Post has won a prestigious national media award for its coverage of the Bradford riots.

The paper was named Regional/Local Paper of the Year at the 10th annual Race in the Media Awards, sponsored by the Commission for Racial Equality.

The award was presented during a ceremony at the Savoy Hotel in London, which was compered by newsreader Moira Stuart and GMTV’s Eamonn Holmes.

Andrew Robinson, chief reporter of the Yorkshire Post’s Bradford office, received the award from Moira Stuart.

She said: “The winner was praised for being sharper than the others in its coverage of the race riots and for displaying good investigative journalism.

“They also got an important scoop in unearthing a report on race relations in Bradford which had been suppressed by the council and which they were not afraid to feature, and comment about on the front page.”

The awards were open to all journalists and broadcasters who have had material published or transmitted that addressed race relations issues in the UK, and this year there were more than 300 entries.

Set up in 1992, the awards aim to encourage informed coverage of race relations, diversity and multi-culturalism across the UK’s media – and for the first time they were webcast live on the internet.
