Regional press winners celebrate business journalism success

The winners of the Yorkshire Bank Northern Business Journalist of the Year Awards have been named at a ceremony in Leeds, where media commentator Andrew Neil handed them trophies, certificates and cash prizes.

This year’s awards received the highest ever number of entries in Yorkshire Bank’s five year association with the event.

The organisers say it included an encouraging number of entries for the Young Business Journalist of the Year category – introduced this year to attract entries from up and coming talent in business journalism. The large number of high quality submissions meant the shortlist had to be extended.

The winners of the individual awards were:

  • Nigel Scott, business editor for the Yorkshire Evening Post, who scooped not only the Daily Newspaper Business Journalist of the Year award, but also the Business Issues Story of the Year award for his ongoing reporting of Marketing Leeds
  • Sam Casey of the Wakefield Express, who, for the second year running, received the award for the Weekly Newspaper Business Journalist of the Year
  • Michael Taylor of North West Business Insider, who was declared Business Magazine Journalist/Contributor of the Year
  • John Pickford from Key 103, who won the Broadcast Journalist of the Year for his story on the regeneration of Manchester over the past decade since an IRA bomb destroyed the city centre
  • Alistair Houghton from the Hull Daily Mail, who scooped the newly-introduced Young Business Journalist of the Year award for his piece ‘Look who’s back in town’ about the man behind the Gadget Shop, Jonathan Elvidge

In the team categories, the Newspaper Business Team of the Year award was presented to the Yorkshire Post business desk. North West Business Insider picked up the award for the Business Magazine Team of the Year.

The entries were judged based on the preparation and research carried out, the originality of the piece, the clarity of the material and the quality of the information imparted.

The judges were Mike Ward, head of journalism at the University of Central Lancashire, James Ramsbotham, chief executive of the North East Chamber of Commerce, Ken Symon, business editor of the Sunday Herald, and Kath Myers, Yorkshire Bank’s head of Financial Solutions Centres (FSCs) for Yorkshire and the North East.

Barry Gardner, head of external affairs for Yorkshire Bank, said: “We are thrilled to be involved in what was such a highly regarded and hotly anticipated event, which ranks among the most prestigious of its kind outside of London.

“The occasion presented a fantastic opportunity to bring the North’s finest journalists together to celebrate such journalistic excellence, resulting in a very enjoyable evening for all involved.”
