Regional press reporters nominated for Mind award

Three regional press journalists are among the nominees for this year’s Mind Journalist of the Year awards, which recognise outstanding reporting on mental health.

Birmingham Post chief features writer Paul Groves, Nottingham Evening Post reporter Joanna Kowalski and Helensburgh Advertiser feature reporter Alistair Mackay are all up for the gong, which will be announced at the 24th Mind Awards ceremony on Wednesday, May 18.

Also on the shortlist are The Guardian’s columnist Nick Johnstone and leader writer Madeleine Bunting, and The Mirror’s senior features writer Ros Wynne-Jones.

The winner will be chosen by the award’s three previous winners: Sarah Boseley of The Guardian, Sophie Goodchild of The Independent on Sunday and Simon Garfield of The Observer.

  • Five years ago a Mind survey discovered that 73 per cent of people with mental health problems felt that media coverage was unfair, unbalanced or very negative.
