Regional press honoured for campaigning work

Campaigning newspapers have been rewarded for their work in the local community in the Newspaper Sales and Promotions Awards 2000.

The awards, announced at the Newspaper Society’s Newspaper Sales and Promotions Conference and Exhibition, attracted hundreds of entries from newspapers around the country and were split into 33 categories.

The Evening Argus, Brighton was named campaigning newspaper of the year in the daily and Sunday paid-for category for Saving Children’s Lives.

The judges said this was a sharply-focused, hard-hitting, efficiently-presented campaign.

Other newspapers praised in this category were The Belfast Telegraph Save Our Railways campaign which was highly commended.

Judges were impressed that this campaign, particularly after 30 years of internal conflict, had moved forward to community initiatives.

The Birmingham Mail was commended for its coverage of the Rover Crisis.

The Darlington and Stockton Times won the campaigning newspaper of the year award in the weekly paid-for category for Market Town Revival, while the Evening Express, Aberdeen won the community newspaper of the year for Evening Express Children 2000.

The East Kent Gazette won the community newspaper of the year for The Swale Walking Bus.
