The Nottingham Evening Post has become one of a handful of organisations to be honoured with a Queen Mother Birthday Award.
The award is recognition of the Post’s commitment to the environment – awarded to organisations which “make an outstanding, long-lasting improvement to the quality of their local environment”.
Stories given special mention included an article on conservation work at the Linby trail, a feature on children joining the Notts Wildlife Trust, and a number of features on the national spring clean.
The Tidy Britain Group, which runs the scheme, singled out the Post because it puts green issues high on the agenda.
East Midlands director Simon Chapman said: “The Nottingham Evening Post has given unprecedented coverage to green issues.
“At a time where we need to raise awareness of important local and global problems like litter, waste, pollution, this is incredibly useful.
“The Nottingham office of the Tidy Britain Group has only been in existence a short while but during that time it has built up a strong relationship with the Evening Post.
“The media are waking up to their responsibility to their community to promote environmental concerns, but few have shown the level of commitment displayed by the Evening Post.
The Post was in 1998 named Environmental Newspaper of the Year in the British Environmental and Media Awards.
Deputy editor Jon Grubb said: “The Post and its staff work hard to improve conditions for readers and working positively for the environment is key to this.”
