Newsquest awards shortlist revealed

Darlington is up against Swindon and York in the battle to be named Newsquest Daily Newspaper of the Year.

The Northern Echo, edited by Peter Barron, hopes to crown a year in which it was named best daily newspaper in the North East in the Tom Cordner Awards. But also on the shortlist are Swindon’s Evening Advertiser, edited by Simon O’Neill, and the York Evening Press, edited by Liz Page.

There is no place for Brighton’s Evening Argus – named BT Southern Daily Newspaper of the Year on Friday – but the paper dominates the awards shortlist, with five of its staff through to the final stages.

Results in 10 categories will be announced on June 21 at the Newsquest editors’ conference in Bradford.
