Newspapers given a sporting chance

Sports desks from across the UK are being given their chance to shine, with the launch of the Sport Industry Awards 2005.

Fifteen prizes will be handed out as part of the competition, encompassing the sporting world, from the best-designed sport kit to the sport brand of the year.

There is also an award for the best newspaper sport coverage, which will go to the publication that best understands its readership and provides the right content, while showing differentiation from other newspapers with innovative, concise and consistent sports journalism.

The award will be judged on overall sports coverage including one-off supplements, weekly supplements and daily coverage.

Entries are now being accepted, and the deadline is Friday, December 17.

More details on how to enter can be found at www.sportindustry.biz.

Winners will be announced during a ceremony at Old Billingsgate on April 28.

Chairman of the judges will be BBC presenter and former Lincolnshire Echo journalist John Inverdale, and the panel will also include Roger Draper, chief executive of Sport England; David Owen, sports editor of the Financial Times; Michael Nutley, editor of New Media Age, and athlete Sally Gunnell.
