Newspaper staff honoured at Creative Industries Awards

Two Archant Norfolk staff have been honoured at the first ever Creative Industries Awards for Norfolk.

Sonya Brown, a photographer for the Evening News in Norwich, won the award for Best Event Photography and Eastern Daily Press columnist and ITV weather presenter Becky Mantin was named Media Personality of the Year.

Sonya’s winning entry, published last November, was of a war veteran peering between two flags outside Norwich Cathedral on Remembrance Day.

Sonya, who has been a photographer for 10 years, said: “It is my first award and it is an amazing feeling to be recognised for my work.

“Winning an award in Norfolk is especially nice because that is where our readers are. I won’t ever forget this feeling and am looking forward to taking even better photos in the future.”

Sonya was presented her award by comic Mel Smith, while Becky, who used to work on the EDP features desk but is now best known as a national ITV weather girl, was given her gong by actor Leslie Phillips.

Other guests at the awards, which was held at the King’s Centre in Norwich, included home secretary Charles Clarke and former BBC director-general Greg Dyke.
