The Sunday Mercury has scooped 10 award honours in three weeks.

The paper’s most recent award achievement came at the 2000 BT Media Awards Midlands regional final in Birmingham, where the paper was named BT Midlands Daily Newspaper of the Year for the second year running.

Mercury reporter Amardeep Bassey was also named BT Midlands Daily News Journalist of the Year – the fourth successive year that a reporter from the paper had been awarded the title.

Judges at the BT ceremony praised Amardeep for his good old-fashioned, hard-nosed reporting and said: “Readers of his newspaper, and the public generally, should be grateful that there are still reporters around who are prepared to undertake detailed investigations requiring huge amounts of hard work, determination and courage.”

Earlier in the week, Mercury photographers Sam Bagnall and Dale Martin had their own taste of success at the Banks’s photo awards, when Sam was named Banks’s Midlands Weekly Press Photographer of the Year, and both were highly commended in the press photographer category.
