MEN scoops top honours

The Manchester Evening News became the big winner of the day at the Guardian Media Group’s first Regional Press Awards.

The daily newspaper scooped seven of the 21 prizes up for grabs at the event, including best newspaper overall, best features pages and best campaign for its Christie Campaign.

A number of the MEN’s journalists also picked up individual awards, including James Ducker who was named reporter of the year, and Diane Cooke who was crowned feature writer of the year.

Earlier this year the group inivited its own publications, journalists and other staff to submit their best efforts to the new scheme and compete against their colleagues.

And after being judged by an independent panel of professionals, the winners were announced at a ceremony in Manchester.

Other winners included the Macclesfield Express, which picked up three awards for best paid weekly, best news pages and best trainee, for Fiona McCartney.
