Howard highly commended in national contest

Howard Griggs, hockey writer for The Argus in Brighton, has been highly commended in a national competition.

Howard, who has been with The Argus for five years, finished runner-up in the Hockey Writers’ Club regional newspaper writer of the year competition.

The annual competition attracts significant entries from the leading regional newspapers across the country.

He said: “Obviously, I would have liked to have won but I am delighted to finish runner-up. This award recognises the excellent work The Argus does covering sport in Sussex.

“It helps that there is a huge hockey interest in this area. The county has Lewes and East Grinstead playing in the National League and Brighton are doing their best to join them, while there are also strong men’s and women’s leagues at county level.”

It is the second time The Argus has been recognised by the Hockey Writers’ Club. A previous runner-up is Howard’s predecessor as hockey writer, Bruce Talbot, who is the paper’s deputy sports editor and chief cricket writer.
