Herald writer does the double at sports awards

Regional press writer Doug Gillon, from The Herald in Glasgow, has scooped two top gongs at the British Sports Journalism Awards.

Doug, the paper’s athletics correspondent, was named Regional Sports Writer of the Year – a title he also won in 2002.

In addition he received the Specialist Correspondent award.

He was presented with his prizes at a gala dinner in London.

In claiming the Regional Writer award, Doug beat other shortlisted entrants Chris Bascombe from the Liverpool Echo, Matthew Chambers from the Evening News in Norwich, Jon Colman from the News & Star in Carlisle, Andrew Smith from Scotland on Sunday and the Sunday Sun’s Neil Farrington.

In the Specialist Correspondent category, he had been shortlisted alongside freelance Bill Elliott, Alan Lee from The Times, Daily Telegraph writers Lewine Mair and Henry Winter, and Brough Scott from the Sunday Telegraph.

The annual awards are sponsored by UK Sport and organised by the Sports Journalists’ Association of Great Britain.

Other winners included Martin Samuel of The Times who was named Sports Writer of the Year for the second successive year.

Sports Photographer of the Year was Stu Forster of Getty Images.
