Hat-trick for Journal's Alastair as he scoops third beer writing prize

Alastair Gilmour from The Journal in Newcastle has been named Beer Writer of the Year by the British Guild of Beer Writers.

It is the third time he has picked up the national award, having previously scooped the title in 1998 and 2000.

Judges praised Alastair’s competition entry and said his work covered an enormous amount of new ground across many subject areas.

Chairman of the judges Richard Morrice said: “The good people of the North East are very lucky indeed to have him writing for them.”

Alastair was presented with a gold tankard at the Guild of Beer Writers’ annual dinner.

He said: “It’s rather nice to be considered the best in the country at what you do.”
