Gold Community Award for crime-conscious editor

Pat Stannard, editor of the Waltham Forest Guardian, has been given a Gold Community Award in recognition of her paper’s role in tackling rising levels of street crime.

The award was made by the East London Communities Association after the paper backed the campaign, which started at Norlington School in Leyton.

Pupils there identified the mugging of teenagers by other teenagers -usually for their mobile phones – as the major problem they faced.

Under the chairmanship of Baroness Richardson an inquiry into the question was set up with a board of 60 members, many of them students, staff and pupils at the school. They involved the local police chief, councillors, MPs and the Mayor of London, Ken Livingstone.

Following the inquiry, a report was published and a fall in street crime in the area has been recorded.
