Former EDP man scoops national TV award

A former Eastern Daily Press reporter has scooped a national award from the Royal Television Society for a documentary he produced for the BBC.

Julian Sturdy, current affairs editor and producer for BBC Norfolk, won the award for best nations and regions documentary for a film which followed a Norwich woman to America for pioneering treatment for her stammer.

Before joining BBC Radio Norfolk in 1994, he had trained with Eastern Counties Newspapers, becoming district chief reporter For the Eastern Daily Press and Dereham And Fakenham Times.

Judges described the film as “original and deeply touching” as Julian received the award from newsreader Natasha Kaplinsky at the Hilton Park Lane hotel in London.

In his acceptance speech, Julian paid tribute to Heidi’s bravery in letting her personal story be told.

Earlier this year the same film helped BBC Inside Out win the TV News/Current Affairs Programme of the Year at the EDF Energy East of England Media Awards.
