The Argus, Brighton, has been named Daily Newspaper of the Year in the annual Newsquest editorial awards.

The judge described the paper’s strength as “the all-round variety of its editorial package, from punchy news pages, through engaging features and an excellent What’s On service to a well-rounded sports section.
He added: “The Argus is strong on human interest and tackles serious issues in an accessible way. It has personaility, verve and humour, provided by an array of ‘laugh-out-loud’ columnists. A thoroughly deserving winner.”
The Pontypool Free Press and Wiltshire Times won the paid-for weekly newspaper under 64 pages and over 64 pages categories, respectively.

In the free newspaper of the year (under 64 pages) the Runcorn World was named winner while the News Shopper won the over 64 pages category.
This year’s editorial awards were combined with the group’s newspaper sales and distribution awards and held at the Forest of Arden Hotel near Coventry.
More than 170 people from across the three disciplines attended the event which was hosted by Margaret Strayton, group editorial manager, and Stephen Lowe, head of sales and marketing, Newsquest (Sussex).
The prizes were presented by Paul Davidson, chairman and chief executive of Newsquest Media Group.
