EDF Energy East of England Media Awards are open for entry

Power company EDF Energy is teaming up with HoldtheFrontPage to launch the second East of England Media Awards.

After the success of last year’s event, which saw newspapers and broadcasters send in more than 180 entries, journalists from all newspapers, radio and television stations in the area are being invited to enter for the 2007 event.

The awards cover newspapers and broadcasters in Norfolk, Suffolk, Essex, Cambridgeshire and parts of Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire and the presentation event will also raise money for The Journalists’ Charity, which benefits journalists and their dependents in times of personal difficulty.

There are 19 categories for which journalists can enter, and all entries are free. Newspapers, broadcasters and individuals can enter as many times as they wish – all we ask is that every entry is accompanied by a separate entry form.

Successful nominees will be invited to an awards ceremony in January at Trinity Park, the Suffolk Showground, for a meal and drinks courtesy of the sponsors, EDF Energy.

The categories are:

– Print Journalist of the Year (Daily)
– Print Journalist of the Year (Weekly)
– Radio Journalist of the Year
– Television Journalist of the Year
– Newcomer of the Year
– Daily Newspaper of the Year
– Weekly Newspaper of the Year (Paid-for)
– Weekly Newspaper of the Year (Free)
– Front Page of the Year
– Radio News/Current Affairs Programme of the Year
– Television News/Current Affairs Programme of the Year
– Website of the Year
– Feature Writer of the Year
– News Photographer of the Year
– Sports Journalist of the Year
– Business Journalist of the Year
– Environmental Journalist of the Year

– Columnist of the Year

The entry form can be downloaded and printed out from here. It also contains some guidelines to help you enter.

The award winners will all receive a certificate and trophy, and individual journalists who triumph will also receive £100.

Work submitted must be from the year October 27, 2005, to October 26 2006, so now is the time to dig out those cuttings and tapes. The closing date for entries is the end of Friday December 2.

EDF Energy’s regional media manager Claire Byrd said: “We had an excellent response to these awards last year and hope to receive even more interest now these awards are in their second year.

“There are so many talented journalists working in the East of England that we know the competition will be tough, so we’d encourage every newspaper, radio station and television newsroom to get their entries in early.”

HoldtheFrontPage publisher Patrick Astill said: “From the excellent standards set by last year’s event, we know that the editorial talent is out there.

“EDF Energy, which distributes power to 3.4m customers in this area, has given its backing to the journalism industry with a series of awards events through the South West, London and the South, and for these, the EDF Energy East of England Awards.

“We’ll be working hard with EDF Energy to make this event as much of a success as last year – and all we need is your help to showcase your very best work.”

We’ll bring you more news and information on these awards in the next few weeks, including the line-up of judges who’ll be looking over the entries.

Completed entry forms and supporting material should be sent to Patrick Astill, HoldtheFrontPage, AN Digital, First Floor, East Point, Cardinal Square, 10 Nottingham Road, Derby DE1 3QT.
