Echo is 'Daily Newspaper of the Year'

The Express and Echo, Exeter, has been named Daily Newspaper of the Year at the 2001 South West BT Media Awards.

One of its journalists, Emma Slee, also picked up an award for work she did while at the North Devon Journal.

The Weekly Newspaper of the Year award went to the Wiltshire Gazette and Herald, which judges called “a real champion of the people”.

Fourteen winners, from regional newspapers, television and radio, were announced during a special presentation lunch at Bristol’s Holiday Inn.

There were awards for the Evening Herald, Plymouth, Bristol Evening Post, Gloucestershire Echo, The News, Portsmouth, and Daily Echo, Bournemouth.

Individuals winners at the ceremony received a cheque for £250, an engraved trophy and a certificate. Runners-up won £50 and a certificate.
