Chronicle racing man is crowned nation's top tipster

An Oldham Evening Chronicle racing correspondent has proved he is the nation’s top tipster after winning a national competition.

Keith McHugh was victorious in the Coral/Racing Post jumps season naps table which is contested by 55 racing experts from national and regional newspapers across the country.

Entrants place a theoretical £1 stake on their daily best bet during the winter jump season in an attempt to make the most ‘profit’.

Keith was awarded the £3,500 first prize and a trophy after finishing with a ‘profit’ of £44.42 – £4.80 ahead of his nearest challenger, the Racing Post’s own expert Steve Mason.

Keith said: “It’s like going down to the bookies and having a pound to play with every day.

“We’ve finished second, third and fifth before, but this time we had a bit of luck – we backed a 33-1 winner – so I think it’s a case of what goes around comes around.”

Earlier in the season, Keith also won £3,000 on the Horserace Writers’ Association Blue Square Tipping Contest.
