Achievements of the past year are celebrated at group awards

Staff from Archant have celebrated the achievements of the past year at the group’s annual awards.

More than 800 staff from titles across England and Scotland gathered for the event at Audley End stately home in Essex, which was hosted by comedian Jon Culshaw.

Prizes were handed out in 17 categories covering editorial, commercial and marketing, including Paid-For Newspaper of the Year which went to the Islington Gazette.

For the second year in a row The Comet, published by Archant Hertfordshire, took the Free Newspaper of the Year title, and the Sidmouth Herald won the new category of Community or Small Scale Newspaper of the Year.

Also among the winners was Romford Recorder reporter Matt Knight who scooped the Editorial Person of the Year title.

The Weston & Somerset Mercury and North Somerset Times collected the Community Initiative of the Year award for its Top of the Pops campaign to find new school crossing patrol people.

The prestigious Archant Award was won by the sales, editorial and production team from the Norfolk Weeklies, and was presented by group chairman Richard Jewson and chief executive John Fry.
