£10,000 prize pot on offer for investigative journalism work

Prize money totalling £10,000 is being offered in a competition to recognise investigative and campaigning journalism.

For the third year running Private Eye and The Guardian are awarding a prize in memory of journalist Paul Foot, and are now looking for entries.

As well as an overall prize of £5,000 five runners-up will also be awarded £1,000.

Submissions will be accepted for material that has been published in a newspaper, magazine or on a website between September 1, 2006 and August 31, 2007.

Individual journalists, teams of journalists or entire publications may enter and entries will be considered for anything from single pieces to entire campaigns.

Last year’s runners-up included Jeni Harvey from The Middleton Guardian and Liam McDougall from The Sunday Herald.

For more details and an application form go to www.private-eye.co.uk. The closing date for entries is September 1.

Winners will be announced during a ceremony in London on October 16.

Paul Foot, who died in 2004, was known for his left-wing politics and campaigns against miscarriages of justice.

He had worked for the Daily Record, the Daily Mirror, the Guardian and Private Eye and was involved in many high-profile campaigns including the Birmingham Six, the Bridgewater Four and the John Poulson scandal.
